TEXAS LT. GOV. DAVID DEWHURST TO HEADLINE CY-FAIR HOUSTON CHAMBER’S 2010 MOBILITY FORUM

Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce President Mary Evans said she is honored to announce Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst as keynote speaker for the Chamber’s 3rd Annual Mobility Forum on Sept. 30.

“We are very excited to have Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, as our featured speaker,” said Mary Evans, president of the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber. “Over the past seven years, Lt. Gov. Dewhurst has worked to build a world-class transportation system in Texas.”  “With funding being the major obstacle for improvements toward the US 290 Corridor, we hope to get a glimpse of what the future holds as we work together to create viable alternative solutions to ease traffic in northwest Houston.”

“We are also proud to announce a full roster of state and county leaders who will share their knowledge and expertise on mobility projects and issues we are following in our community.”

Those speakers include Texas State Senator Dan Patrick; Texas State Senator Tommy Williams, Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation & Homeland Security Committee; Harris County Judge Ed Emmett; and Dr. David Ellis, research scientist at the Texas Transportation Institute.

The Mobility Forum provides a venue for in-depth discussion of transportation issues in Texas; the challenges caused by growing congestion; and the menu of mobility solutions on the table that could bring immediate and long-term relief to Cy-Fair community in particular, and Houston region in general, Evans said.

The population boom experienced by northwest Harris County’s Cy-Fair community in the past decade has put pressure on U.S. 290 and the roads that are charged with shouldering the added traffic burden that comes along with that growth. While transportation planners work to formulate roadway and mass transit systems to alleviate some of that congestion, the timing of those projects is not set in stone as there are limited federal, state and local transportation dollars to fund large-scale projects.

At the 2010 Mobility Forum, Chamber members and non-members are invited to participate in the discussion on how the region addresses mobility challenges in the face of continued growth. There will be two sessions with a luncheon in between.

Discussion at the Chamber’s 2009 Mobility Forum – which drew a distinguished crowd of over 300 members and guests - touched on a variety of projects and subjects but circled around a common theme: The Cy-Fair area needs a combination of several modes of transit to serve the needs of residents and businesses – and to ward off a sea of congestion - in the next 20 years and beyond.

The Mobility Forum will be held Thursday, September 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress. Individual tickets are $60 each and tables of ten range from $600 to $2,500. Lunch will be served. For more information, please contact Mary Evans at (281) 373-1390 or mary@cyfairchamber.com. To register on line, please visit www.cyfairchamber.com.

Deadline for registration is Friday, September 24.

Lawsuit Against Segment E Dismissed/Grand Parkway Advances

US District Judge Sim Lake ruled May 19th that TxDOT and FHWA did not act arbitrarily or capriciously in issuing the FEIS and ROD recommending construction of Segment E of the Grand Parkway as claimed by the Sierra Club and Audubon Society in their bid to stop Segment E of the Grand Parkway.  The Judge found for the agencies with prejudice.  This clears the way for HCTRA to advance the project to construction when the Corps of Engineers issues it wetlands mitigation letter.  For more information on the conclusion, click the following link:  (Read the Judges opinion at this link PDF)
